Mother Alfred Moes and St. Francis

A Critical Conversation

Following a tornado in 1883, Mother Alfred Moes offered that the Sisters of St. Francis would raise funds to construct a hospital and serve there as nurses if William Worrall Mayo, M.D., and his sons would provide the surgical care. In formalizing their agreement, Mother Alfred and Dr. Mayo did not have a legal contract – they shook hands. This early example of trust and mutual respect remains a hallmark of Mayo Clinic today.
