Rochester
Saint Marys Chapel Mayo Clinic Hospital

1904 Section

1904 chapel nave with pews and murals

Introduction

Since its opening in 1889, Mayo Clinic Hospital has always included a chapel, which has been remodeled and expanded over time. The 1904 section, designed in Italian Renaissance artwork style, adjoins the main chapel that opened in 1932. Funded not by hospital revenue or large bequests, but by small donations from many, the chapel architecture stands as an expression of faith and service.

Angels Carrying Laurel Wreaths

Castings of angels are framed in recessed areas where the north and south walls join the ceiling. They were created by Italian artists who worked on exhibits for the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.
