Film highlights tornado that gave rise to Mayo Clinic
On August 21, 1883, a tornado devastated the prairie town of Rochester, Minnesota. It also led to the unique partnership between William Worrall Mayo, M.D., his sons and the Sisters of St. Francis.
This pivotal moment is captured in the short film, “Born in a Storm: The Tornado That Gave Rise to Mayo Clinic.”
The script is based upon first-person accounts of Charles H. Mayo, M.D., and others who survived the disaster. Music, graphics and visual treatment of historic photos help bring the story to life.
By forming a new way to work together amid crisis conditions, the Mayos and the Franciscans established the foundation of the Mayo Clinic Values and Model of Care that is the hallmark of Mayo Clinic today.
